Old Testament Bible Verses on the Holy Spirit?
Genesis 1:1-2
The Beginning
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters."
This verse marks the very beginning, so I must talk about it and the Holy Spirit to set the stage. We are not going to discuss each verse individually. This is mostly just the list of all the verses below for us to read and reference directly.
Since this is the very beginning, let's lay the foundation for some things about the Holy Spirit. What a powerful and amazing revelation of God through His Word from the very beginning of time! This verse provides profound insights into God and the Holy Spirit, even before and at the start of creation.
It reveals the uncreated God who created all things and exists as one in three: the Trinity—God the Father, and the Son, and Holy Spirit. The Son (Jesus Christ) is the Word that became flesh and dwelt among us. The Bible says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Though the Bible and scriptures were not yet written, the Word truly reveals our God and Jesus Christ. He is the Word who became flesh, who was and is God before and at the very beginning.
The Holy Spirit existed even before the beginning of creation. This evidence and testimony in scripture show that the Holy Spirit is the very Spirit of God. He is co-equal, co-eternal, and co-existent with the Father and the Son, yet also His own person and manifestation within the Trinity of the Godhead. He affects and manifests His glory in real, tangible ways on earth, even from the very creation of all things.
Holy Spirit - Co-equal, Co-eternal, and Co-existent
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Godhead. He is co-equal, co-eternal, and co-existent with the Father and the Son. His ministry on earth is to convict and convert humanity, as well as to serve as the great Paraclete. He is our comforter, counselor, helper, intercessor, advocate, strengthener, and standby—to the Church.
It is interesting that when Genesis says God endows people with life by breathing into their nostrils the “breath of life” (Genesis 2:7), the word for “breath” is the same word translated elsewhere as “spirit.” So technically that may take us up to 259 versus so far if we included this one.
Genesis 6:3
"And the Lord said, 'My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.'"
Genesis 41:38
"And Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom is the Spirit of God?'"
Exodus Bible verses on the Holy Spirit
Exodus 28:3
"So you shall speak to all who are gifted artisans, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron’s garments, to consecrate him, that he may minister to Me as priest."
Exodus 31:3
"And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship,"
Exodus 35:31
"and He has filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom and understanding, in knowledge and all manner of workmanship,"
The Next Book of The Bible is "Leviticus"
Just want to mention I'm not skipping books like Leviticus, Joshua, Ruth, or Ezra. Leviticus focuses on Israelite laws, rituals, and moral codes, not explicitly mentioning the Holy Spirit. However, throughout scripture, we witness the Holy Spirit's influence, manifestations, and revelation. Keep in mind, even when scripture doesn't directly mention the Holy Spirit, we see His workings, manifestations, and revelations throughout.
An example of this in Leviticus is this verse here:
Leviticus 9:22-24
"Then Aaron lifted his hand toward the people, blessed them, and came down from offering the sin offering, the burnt offering, and peace offerings. 23 And Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle of meeting, and came out and blessed the people. Then the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people, 24 and fire came out from before the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the fat on the altar. When all the people saw it, they shouted and fell on their faces."
The Holy Spirit of God revealed the glory of the Lord to all the people. Just as the burning bush of fire before Moses manifested on earth by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Other books and scriptures of the Old and New Testament discuss the Holy Spirit more directly, which I have listed here.
Now, let's move on to Bible verses on the Holy Spirit in the book of Numbers.
Numbers Bible verses on the Holy Spirit
Numbers 11:17
"Then I will come down and talk with you there. I will take of the Spirit that is upon you and will put the same upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you may not bear it yourself alone."
Numbers 11:25
"Then the Lord came down in the cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the Spirit that was upon him, and placed the same upon the seventy elders; and it happened, when the Spirit rested upon them, that they prophesied, although they never did so again."
Numbers 24:2
"And Balaam raised his eyes, and saw Israel encamped according to their tribes; and the Spirit of God came upon him."
Numbers 27:18
"And the Lord said to Moses: “Take Joshua the son of Nun with you, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him;"
Deuteronomy Bible verses on the Holy Spirit
Deuteronomy 34:9
"Now Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; so the children of Israel heeded him, and did as the Lord had commanded Moses."
The Next Book of The Bible here is "Joshua"
The Book of Joshua doesn't mention the Holy Spirit directly. It focuses on Joshua's leadership, the conquest of Canaan, and distributing land to Israel's tribes. God's presence and guidance are clear, like in Joshua 1:9, where He tells Joshua to be strong and courageous because He's with him. Though "Holy Spirit" or "Spirit of God" aren't used, God's influence and presence are implied in Joshua's and Israelites' successes and guidance.
Now, let's move on to Bible verses on the Holy Spirit in the book of Judges.
Judges Bible verses on the Holy Spirit
Judges 3:10
"The Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the Lord delivered Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed over Cushan-Rishathaim."
Judges 6:34
"But the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon; then he blew the trumpet, and the Abiezrites gathered behind him."
Judges 13:25
"And the Spirit of the Lord began to move upon him at Mahaneh Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol."
Judges 11:29
"Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh, and passed through Mizpah of Gilead; and from Mizpah of Gilead he advanced toward the people of Ammon."
Judges 14:6
"And the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and he tore the lion apart as one would have torn apart a young goat, though he had nothing in his hand. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done."
Judges 14:19
"Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon him mightily, and he went down to Ashkelon and killed thirty of their men, took their apparel, and gave the changes of clothing to those who had explained the riddle. So his anger was aroused, and he went back up to his father’s house."
Judges 15:14
"When he came to Lehi, the Philistines came shouting against him. Then the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him; and the ropes that were on his arms became like flax that is burned with fire, and his bonds [a]broke loose from his hands."
The Next Book of The Bible is "Ruth"
The Book of Ruth does not explicitly mention the Holy Spirit or the Spirit of God. Its narrative focuses on Ruth, a Moabite woman, her loyalty to her mother-in-law Naomi, and her eventual marriage to Boaz. It highlights themes of loyalty, kindness, and God's providence.
The Holy Spirit isn't directly mentioned, but God's care and guidance shine through Ruth and Naomi's story. Ruth emphasizes God's faithfulness and His plans through human relationships, not the Holy Spirit.
Now, let's move on to Bible verses on the Holy Spirit in the book of 1 Samuel.
1 and 2 Samuel Bible verses on the Holy Spirit
1 Samuel 10:6
"Then the Spirit of the Lord will come upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man."

1 Samuel 16:14
"But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and a distressing spirit from the Lord troubled him."
1 Samuel 19:20-23
"Then Saul sent messengers to take David. And when they saw the group of prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as leader over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied. 21 And when Saul was told, he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise. Then Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they prophesied also. 22 Then he also went to Ramah, and came to the great well that is at Sechu. So he asked, and said, “Where are Samuel and David?”
And someone said, “Indeed they are at Naioth in Ramah.” 23 So he went there to Naioth in Ramah. Then the Spirit of God was upon him also, and he went on and prophesied until he came to Naioth in Ramah." Now on to Bible verses on the Holy Spirit in the book of 2 Samuel.
2 Samuel 23:2
"The Spirit of the Lord spoke by me,
And His word was on my tongue."
1 and 2 Kings Bible verses on the Holy Spirit
1 Kings 18:12
"And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone from you, that the Spirit of the Lord will carry you to a place I do not know; so when I go and tell Ahab, and he cannot find you, he will kill me. But I your servant have feared the Lord from my youth."
2 Kings 2:16
"Then they said to him, “Look now, there are fifty strong men with your servants. Please let them go and search for your master, lest perhaps the Spirit of the Lord has taken him up and cast him upon some mountain or into some valley.”And he said, “You shall not send anyone.”
1 and 2 Chronicles Bible verses on the Holy Spirit
1 Chronicles 12:18
"Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, chief of the captains, and he said:
“We are yours, O David;
We are on your side, O son of Jesse!
Peace, peace to you,
And peace to your helpers!
For your God helps you.”
So David received them, and made them captains of the troop."
1 Chronicles 28:12
"and the plans for all that he had by the Spirit, of the courts of the house of the Lord, of all the chambers all around, of the treasuries of the house of God, and of the treasuries for the dedicated things;"
2 Chronicles 15:1
"Now the Spirit of God came upon Azariah the son of Oded."
2 Chronicles 18:23
"Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah went near and struck Micaiah on the cheek, and said, “Which way did the spirit from the Lord go from me to speak to you?”

2 Chronicles 24:20
"Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and also put it in writing, saying,"
The Next Book of The Bible is "Ezra"
The Book of Ezra, found in the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament, primarily focuses on the return of the exiled Jews from Babylon to Jerusalem and the rebuilding of the temple. While the "Holy Spirit" is not explicitly mentioned in Ezra, the concept of God's Spirit working among His people is evident throughout the Old Testament, including in the events described in Ezra.
In Ezra, we see God's guidance and providence at work as He enables the people to return to their land and rebuild the temple. Though the Holy Spirit might not be explicitly named, the actions and interventions of God in the lives of individuals and the community often reflect the work of His Spirit.
So, while the specific term "Holy Spirit" or "Spirit of God" may not appear in Ezra, the presence and influence of God's Spirit can be understood in the broader context of God's interaction with His people.
Now on to Bible verses on the Holy Spirit in the book of Nehemiah.
Nehemiah Bible verses on the Holy Spirit
Nehemiah 9:20
"You also gave Your good Spirit to instruct them,
And did not withhold Your manna from their mouth,
And gave them water for their thirst."
Nehemiah 9:30
"Yet for many years You had patience with them,
And testified against them by Your Spirit in Your prophets.
Yet they would not listen;
Therefore You gave them into the hand of the peoples of the lands."
The Next Book of The Bible is "Esther"
"The Holy Spirit" is not explicitly mentioned in the Book of Esther. The narrative primarily focuses on the events surrounding Queen Esther and the deliverance of the Jewish people from the plot of Haman. However, like other books in the Old Testament where the Holy Spirit may not be named directly, the overarching theme of God's guidance, protection, and providence can be understood throughout the story.
While the Book of Esther doesn't use the term "Holy Spirit," it still emphasizes the presence of God and His sovereignty over human affairs. Now on to Bible verses on the Holy Spirit in the book of Job.

"By His Spirit He adorned the heavens;
His hand pierced the fleeing serpent."

And man would return to dust."

"Teach me to do Your will,
For You are my God;
Your Spirit is good.
Lead me in the land of uprightness."
Proverbs Bible verses on the Holy Spirit
Proverbs 1:23
"Turn at my rebuke;
Surely I will pour out my spirit on you;
I will make my words known to you."
The Next Book of The Bible is "Ecclesiastes"
The Book of Ecclesiastes does not explicitly mention the Holy Spirit. Ecclesiastes, written by Qoheleth (often identified as Solomon), focuses on reflections about the meaning of life, the inevitability of death, and the pursuit of wisdom and fulfillment. The book grapples with the seeming futility of human endeavors ("vanity of vanities, all is vanity") and explores themes such as the limits of human understanding, the value of enjoying life's simple pleasures, and the importance of fearing God and keeping His commandments. While the book addresses the human spirit and its relationship to life and death, it does not directly refer to the Holy Spirit. Now on to more Bible verses on the Holy Spirit.
The Next Book of The Bible is "The Song of Solomon (also known as the Song of Songs)"
The Song of Solomon (also known as the Song of Songs) does not explicitly mention the Holy Spirit or the "Spirit of God." This book, attributed to Solomon, is a collection of lyrical poems that celebrate love and the intimate relationship between a bride and her groom. It is often interpreted as an allegory for the love between God and His people or, in Christian interpretations, between Christ and the Church. The primary themes of the Song of Solomon include:
- Romantic Love: The poems vividly describe the beauty, passion, and intimacy of romantic love between a man and a woman.
- Mutual Desire: The expressions of mutual desire and admiration reflect the deep affection and emotional connection between the lovers.
- Commitment and Faithfulness: The poems emphasize the importance of commitment, loyalty, and the enduring nature of true love.
- Celebration of Marriage: The book celebrates marriage as a sacred and joyous institution, blessed by God.
Symbolism and Spiritual Meaning
While the Song of Solomon is rich in metaphor and symbolism related to human love, it is also deeply meaningful when understood as an allegory for our relationship with God and the Holy Spirit:
- Intimacy with God: The deep, intimate love expressed in the Song of Solomon can be seen as a reflection of the profound closeness and communion that believers are invited to experience with God. It is important to understand that this does not suggest any type of sexual intimacy with God. Instead, it symbolizes a spiritual and emotional connection, characterized by love, devotion, and mutual delight. This intimate relationship is nurtured by the Holy Spirit, who dwells within believers and draws them into a deeper fellowship with God.
- Christ and His Bride: In Christian theology, the bridegroom is often seen as a representation of Christ, and the bride as the Church. The passionate love and mutual devotion depicted in the poems symbolize Christ's sacrificial love for His Church and the Church's devoted response to His love. This relationship is empowered and sustained by the Holy Spirit.
- Divine Love and Human Response: The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in enabling believers to experience and respond to God's love. The Song of Solomon's depiction of love can be seen as an illustration of the Spirit-led relationship between Christ and His followers, marked by love, desire, and commitment.
Through its celebration of love and its allegorical interpretations, the Song of Solomon offers profound insights into the nature of our relationship with God, the love of Christ for His Church, and the role of the Holy Spirit in fostering this divine intimacy. Let's look at Bible verses on the Holy Spirit in Isaiah.

So I answered, “O Lord God, You know.”
4 Again He said to me, “Prophesy to these bones, and say to them, ‘O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! 5 Thus says the Lord God to these bones: “Surely I will cause breath to enter into you, and you shall live. 6 I will put sinews on you and bring flesh upon you, cover you with skin and put breath in you; and you shall live. Then you shall know that I am the Lord.” ’ ”
7 So I prophesied as I was commanded; and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and suddenly a rattling; and the bones came together, bone to bone. 8 Indeed, as I looked, the sinews and the flesh came upon them, and the skin covered them over; but there was no breath in them.
9 Also He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.” ’ ” 10 So I prophesied as He commanded me, and breath came into them, and they lived, and stood upon their feet, an exceedingly great army.
11 Then He said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They indeed say, ‘Our bones are dry, our hope is lost, and we ourselves are cut off!’ 12 Therefore prophesy and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Behold, O My people, I will open your graves and cause you to come up from your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel. 13 Then you shall know that I am the Lord, when I have opened your graves, O My people, and brought you up from your graves. 14 I will put My Spirit in you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. "Then I heard a voice from heaven saying to me, 'Write: "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on."' 'Yes,' says the Spirit, 'that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow them.'"
Revelation 19:10
"And I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, 'See that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.'"
Revelation 22:17
"And the Spirit and the bride say, 'Come!' And let him who hears say, 'Come!' And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely."
As you can see, there are many Bible verses on the Holy Spirit in the Holy Scriptures. I have listed the 258 Bible verses on the Holy Spirit. These versus directly mention or reference the Holy Spirit of God in scripture. If you found any versus you believed I missed feel free to send them to us. This comprehensive list includes all the verses that directly mention or discuss the Holy Spirit in the Bible.
I hope you have been greatly blessed by these Holy Scriptures from the Word of God. I want to encourage you to re-read and study these Bible verses on the Holy Spirit. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal all truth about Himself to you through His Word.
May you also enter into a personal relationship and fellowship with Him. Alive as Jesus said, truly He is with us always, even to the very end of the age.
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father.Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son]. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.
Amen.
